Bring Better to the Bedside as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at Mercy Medical Center

We believe in bringing "better" to our local community in Cedar Rapids—better care, better collaboration, and a deep commitment to the people we serve. We'd love to talk if you're looking for a role that supports your professional growth and connection to a vibrant community.

Local Team Collaboration:

  • We take pride in our well-established team of 14 physicians and 8 APPs at Mercy Medical Center.
  • Work alongside a Medical Director, an Associate Medical Director, two clinical performance nurses, and a Program Manager
  • As a team, we value our collaboration with the nurses and specialists throughout the hospital.
  • We utilize EPIC as well as our internal informatics platform.
  • Nurse Practitioner board certification is required
  • At least 1 year of acute care hospitalist experience preferred.

Scheduling:

  • We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner for both our day and swing shifts with full and part-time schedules.
  • Our schedule is relatively predictable, so our team typically works 7-days-on, 7-days-off.
  • Generally, our nurse practitioners will work 7 am-5 pm and 4 pm-2 am, rounding during the day shift (average of 12 patients per shift) and focusing on admissions during the evening shift (average of 7-8 admissions per shift). However, volumes can ebb and flow depending on the time of year and staffing.
  • Highly autonomous role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Even though our nurse practitioners don’t provide ICU coverage, our physicians may assist from a medical management perspective from time to time.
  • Our team is highly engaged, so we respond to codes and rapid alerts on our patients and assist if one is called and we are nearby; we try to help each other in any way we can.
  • We meet monthly for a team meeting and a patient experience touch base. We also have a short morning huddle daily to secure handoffs and ensure everyone is ready for the day.

Living and Working in Cedar Rapids:

  • Many who come to Cedar Rapids are pleasantly surprised to find a highly diverse population base. This is mainly due to major employers such as Collins Aerospace and Transamerica. These world-renowned companies, coupled with the University of Iowa (located 30 minutes from Cedar Rapids), equate to the celebration of cultural diversity that makes Cedar Rapids feel comfortable to many worldwide.
  • Our team actively serves on hospital committees and projects, with two hospitals represented for better coverage and time management. We encourage members to join committees that match their passions. Since partnering with Mercy in 2015, we’ve built a strong relationship with the administration and are trusted on hospital-wide initiatives. Beyond the hospital, we support our community by adopting a family during the holidays and helping the Catholic Worker House emergency shelter.

Compensation:

  •  Rewarding compensation structure.

Hear from our team

  • Courtney

“Our advanced practice providers work in a team-based care model alongside their physician colleagues. They're driving the care for their patients, but at the same time, they have that physician collaborator there. If they have a question, if they need another set of eyes on the patient, the physician is there to do that. This provides our advanced practice providers with the support needed to practice at the top of their license.”

    April Burke,
    Chief Advanced Practice Officer
