Redefine excellence in your career as a Hospital Medicine Physician Assistant in Canton, Ohio

In Canton, Ohio, we strive to deliver “better” to our community—better care, better collaboration, and a heartfelt dedication to those we serve. Let’s start a conversation if you’re seeking a role that fosters professional growth and community connection.

Local Team Collaboration:

  • At Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, our strong, collaborative team includes 21 physicians and 6 advanced practice providers (APPs), with the support of a clinical performance nurse and hospitalist coordinator.
  • Our providers come from places worldwide, including Palestine, India, the Philippines, and the United States (OH, PA, MI).
  • Our providers are members of numerous committees within the organization. These include infection prevention, clinical documentation excellence, inpatient sepsis, pharmacy and therapeutics, patient safety, antimicrobial stewardship, and a readmission committee.
  • The group meets for a team huddle every Tuesday and Friday at 8 a.m. Most of the time, leaders from other departments give us 10–15-minute teaching topics. We also have a one-hour team meeting monthly where the providers vote on any changes to our workflow.

Qualifications:

  • Board-Certified/Eligible Physician Assistant
  • Prior hospitalist experience is strongly preferred
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Scheduling:

  • We have a 7-days-on, 7-days-off schedule, but help cover for our teammates as needed. This is especially important to us as most providers travel out of the country frequently to visit their families.
  • Available day shift APP opening
  • 9 physicians and 2 APPs provide inpatient coverage daily (7 am—7 pm).
  • 2 physicians work swing shifts to assist with admissions.
  • 1 physician and 1 APP provide night coverage (7 pm—7 am).

Key Responsibilities:

  • We welcome the challenge of complex cases, but Mercy Hospital’s ICU is closed to intensivists. The hospitalists are not responsible for codes or procedures; a team of ICU APPs covers all the codes.
  • Currently, we admit patients to the CCU with support from cardiology. However, this practice is supposed to change as the critical care team continues hiring more providers.
  • Our night team is responsible for working with the swing providers to see new consults in the ER and field transfer calls for patients transferring to Mercy. The APP handles the floor calls and is supported by the Medical Emergency Response Team, which handles all the code calls
  • After 4 am, the night team does not physically see new consults (unless urgently warranted). They are responsible for placing basic admission orders on the new patients between 4a-7a. The nocturnist is responsible for distributing the patients to the appropriate lists for the day providers.
  • A newly formed Medical Emergency Response Team, comprised of ICU APPs, provides 24/7 coverage for rapid responses and any other urgent overhead code, including code blues, strokes, sepsis alerts, and violent patients.
  • We admit patients to the CCU with close cardiology and intensivist support.

Living and Working in Canton:

  • Many residents appreciate living in Canton, Ohio, for its rich cultural heritage, which includes the Pro Football Hall of Fame and numerous museums. The city’s affordable cost of living, diverse community, and proximity to outdoor recreational opportunities further contribute to the overall quality of life that attracts and satisfies residents.

Compensation:

  • Competitive compensation package.

Hear from our team

  • Courtney

“Our advanced practice providers work in a team-based care model alongside their physician colleagues. They're driving the care for their patients, but at the same time, they have that physician collaborator there. If they have a question, if they need another set of eyes on the patient, the physician is there to do that. This provides our advanced practice providers with the support needed to practice at the top of their license.”

    April Burke,
    Chief Advanced Practice Officer
