Living and working in Amarillo, Texas:

  • Recently voted as one of the top cities in the country to start a business and raise a family. Amarillo is historically known as "The Yellow Rose of Texas,” as the city takes its name from the Spanish word for yellow and has been most recently referred to as "Rotor City, USA" for its V-22 Osprey hybrid aircraft assembly plant.
  • Amarillo has several natural attractions near the city, including the Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the U.S.’s second-largest canyon system, after the Grand Canyon, and the Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument. Cultural points of interest located in the city are the American Quarter Horse Association, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, which claims to be the largest historical museum in Texas, and the Don Harrington Discovery Center.
  • Downtown is clean, plain, and mostly modern. For the region, the area has a relatively pleasant, dry climate; a small-town feel; and a low cost of living, but the downside is a wide-open, featureless space far across the plains from anywhere else.
  • Summer days are warm to hot with low humidity; evenings are pleasant. The area is generally sunny and dry with periods of spring and summer thunderstorms and winter snowstorms.
  • Amarillo is located near the middle of the Texas Panhandle. Amarillo sits closer in proximity to the Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Colorado borders.

  • Eligible for RVU and Quality bonus.
