Nocturnist – Austin, TX

To our prospective teammates,

I’m the Hospitalist Medical Director at Ascension Seton Northwest Hospital in Austin, Texas. Since 2008, I have been an integral part of the team, initially as a hospitalist and growing into the medical director role. We are expanding our team and are looking for new colleagues to join us. We welcome recent graduates as well as seasoned clinicians. I want to share more about who we are and what we do — specifically about our people, practice, and purpose — as you consider your options:

People
  • We operate as a team of four full-time day hospitalists and one nocturnist, ensuring coverage for all seven days of the week.
  • We take pride in the diversity of our team, stemming from varied geographic, educational, and training backgrounds.
  • Collaboration is key within our hospital. We work closely with colleagues from different departments to ensure seamless patient care transitions.
Practice
  • We are seeking qualified clinicians to fill out our team at Ascension Seton Northwest Hospital.
  • Our hospital has 64 med/surg beds, another eight ICU beds, six intermediate care beds, and obstetrics and mother/baby units.
  • Our staffing model is seven days (nights) on and seven off.
  • We have an open ICU and provide full-time coverage, although pulmonary/ critical care is always available if not in-house.
  • Our nocturnist responsibilities include coverage of our ER and acceptance of any patients requiring transfer from outlying facilities for a higher level of care. After hours, this usually involves patients who are being referred in for general surgery or urologic interventions.
  • The ER staff handles all Code Blue calls, although the nocturnist can handle appropriate rapid-response calls.
  • Our nocturnist also handles cross-cover calls on an average census of 40-50 patients nightly.
  •  Anesthesiology and general surgery are available in-house full-time. Other specialties, including radiology, cardiology, pulmonary/CC, medical, and surgical subspecialties, are available 24/7.
  • Patients requiring higher levels of care, including trauma, interventional cardiology, vascular, and plastic surgery, are transferred out by the ER before involvement by our hospitalist team.
  • Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, and AD&D insurance, long- and short-term disability, 401k with match, paid medical malpractice and tail coverage, and annual CME allowance.
Purpose
  • We put patients first. Always.
  • We value and support growth and development in our hospital medicine practice, allowing you to explore new opportunities locally and within the broader medical group.
  • We’re a community-minded team and support involvement and contributions to community health and wellness in and out of the hospital.
