Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant – Canton, OH

To prospective teammates,

I’m the medical director for Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, located in Canton, Ohio. I have been a part of Sound Physicians for less than one year. I’m proud of the hospitalist practice we have built and welcome interest from advanced practice providers (APPs) coming out of training or desiring a career change. I’d like to share more about it, specifically about our people, practice, and purpose, as you consider options:

People
  • We are a closely knit, established team of 21 physicians and 6 advanced practice providers, with the support of a clinical performance nurse and hospitalist coordinator. We have nine physicians and two APPs providing inpatient coverage daily (7 am to 7 pm). We have two physicians on swing shifts to assist with admissions. One physician and one APP provide night coverage (7 pm to 7 am).
  • We have providers that come from a variety of places across the world, including Palestine, India, the Philippines, and the United States (OH, PA, MI), to name a few.
  • Our providers are members of numerous committees within the organization. These include infection prevention, clinical documentation excellence, inpatient sepsis, pharmacy and therapeutics, patient safety, antimicrobial stewardship, and readmission committees.
  • Many team members have families and enjoy getting together outside the workplace. Their hobbies include soccer, hiking, eating, cooking, golfing, traveling, cricket, shopping, and bowling. We will get together for a large cookout once or twice a year as a group.
Practice
  • We welcome the challenge of complex cases, but the ICU at Mercy Hospital is closed to the intensivists. The hospitalists are not responsible for codes or procedures. A team of ICU APPs covers all the codes. Currently, we do admit patients to the CCU with cardiology consultant support. However, this practice is supposed to change in the future as the critical care team continues to hire more providers.
  • The group meets for a team huddle every Tuesday and Friday at 8 am. Most of the time, we have leaders from other departments who will give us 10–15-minute teaching topics during this time. We also have a one-hour team meeting monthly where the providers vote if any changes need to be made to our workflow.
  • We have a seven on/ off schedule but help cover for our teammates as needed. This is especially important to us as most providers travel out of the country frequently to visit their families.
  • Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, and AD&D insurance, long- and short-term disability, 401k with match, paid medical malpractice and tail coverage, and annual CME allowance.
Purpose
  • We put patients first. Always.
  • A focus on growth and development is a key feature of Sound’s practices, where teammates can expand their careers here locally and within the broader medical group.
  • We’re a community-minded team and encourage our team members who want to contribute in and out of the hospital to help make our local community thrive.
