Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant, Critical Care (PRN)- Austin, TX

To our prospective teammates,

I’m the system medical director for our 4 intensivist programs within the St. David’s Health System located in Austin, TX. I’ve been a part of Sound for just over 3 years, joining the group in July of 2020 to help establish our first ICU programs in Austin at St. David’s Round Rock and North Austin.  Due to success at those sites, we expanded to St. David’s Med Center and Heart Hospital of Austin in February of 2021. I’m proud of the critical care practice we’ve built and welcome interest from practicing critical care nurse practitioners and physician assistants looking for per diem/moonlighting work.

I’d like to share more about who we are and what we do — specifically about our people, practice, and purpose — as you consider your options:

People
  • We’re a closely-knit, established team of 4 intensivists and 2 advanced practice providers (APPs).
  • Our team is comprised of clinicians from diverse geographic, educational, and training backgrounds who lean on and learn from each other in their approach to patient care.
  • Within the hospital, we work closely with our colleagues in other departments to ensure a smooth transition of care.
  • Many of us are active in community health initiatives through the hospital.
Practice
  • This is a PRN position that entails working across St. David’s Medical Center, St. David’s Round Rock, and St. David’s North Austin, depending on the need.
  • The coverage model at each of our St. David’s ICUs entails day physicians with APPs covering the ICU overnight from 7p-7a. There is always an Intensivist available telephonically.
  • St. David’s Medical Center is a comprehensive stroke center and referral center for neurosurgery and neurovascular. We have a 24-bed med/surg ICU with a 16-bed neurocritical care unit.
  • St. David’s North Austin Medical Center is a 440-bed acute care facility and level IV trauma center. We have a 24-bed med/surg ICU.
  • St. David’s Round Rock is a 209-bed, level II trauma center, that has a 22-bed med/surg ICU.
  • We have excellent relationships with consulting services like IR, neurology, and anesthesia.
  • New ECMO program at St. David’s Med Center.
  • APPs work autonomously, admitting patients to the ICU and performing procedures (arterial lines, central lines, and intubations). As such, we are looking for nurse practitioners or physician assistants with at least 1 year of critical care experience in the scope of ACNP or PA.
Purpose
  • We put patients first. Always.
  • We value and support growth and development in our critical care practice, allowing you to explore new opportunities locally and within the broader medical group.
  • We’re a community-minded team and support involvement and contributions to community health and wellness in and out of the hospital.
